#Salute Saturday: Once a Chinthe, always a Chinthe

When Richard Earl joined the #RCAF at age 18 in 1942, he never imagined he would end up as a radio operator for one of two brand new Canadian transport squadrons in India. He was placed in 435 Squadron to work on the Dakota C-3, or “Dak”, as it is fondly remembered by its operators. Seventy-five years later, through a chance meeting, Mr. Earl had the opportunity to reunite with his former squadron at 17 Wing Winnipeg, Manitoba.

My latest aviation painting...

BOMARC Vs. Bear

Thankfully this never occurred but is an illustration of what WW3 might have looked like over Canada in the early days of the Cold war.

Nearly forgotten in RCAF history...

The RCAF employed two full Squadrons (446 & 447) of 56 CIM-10 BOMARC missiles at North Bay Ontario and La Macaza Quebec, form the early 60s to 1972.

These surface to air missiles with a 7-10 kiloton nuclear warhead, were designed to knock down the expected waves of Soviet bombers coming over the North Pole on their way to attack targets in Canada and the USA.
Together with the CF-101 Voodoo, this was Canada's contribution to continental air defence and NORAD.
Both the BOMARC and CF-101 were NUCLEAR armed as well was the Europe based CF-104 Starfighter.

It may be surprising to some that peaceful old Canada's offensive and defensive capabilities throughout much of the Cold War was almost totally NUCLEAR!

427 Wing London

Pilot Profile. Dave Hewitt, #2 position, right wing. Dave earned his pilots licensee at age 20 in 1989. He soloed on the family Harvard in 1990 and started flying aerobatics in the Harvard at air shows in 1995. A few years later, in 1998, Dave began training in formation aerobatics and since 2000 he has flown the #2 position with the Canadian Harvard Aerobatic Team.

Dave currently has over 1,500 hours of flight time in the Harvard and over 1,700 hours of total flight time. Along with his Harvard RCAF 3039, Dave owns a Beech 18, Stearman and Citabria as well as being a past owner of a Pitts Special. He performed the first post-restoration flight on Yale 3399 and has flown two Hawker Hurricanes for their owners, RAF KZ321 and RCAF 5481. Dave has also flown the Harvard in RCAF Heritage Flights with the Canadian Armed Forces CF-18 Hornet Demo Team and the T-33 “Mako Shark". Dave’s father, Bob Hewitt, co-founded the Canadian Harvard Aircraft Association and the Jet Aircraft Museum. Dave resides in Woodstock with his wife and two children and owns an auto parts manufacturing company. Dave’s eldest son, Dylan, soloed in 2017, and currently flies the family Citabria. Dylan is also a member of the CHAT ground crew.

Dave owns ex-RCAF Harvard Mk.II 3039 that was the 6th Harvard airframe manufactured in Montreal by Noorduyn Aircraft in 1941. In 1953, the airframe was loaned from the RCAF to the Royal Canadian Navy and served at Royal Canadian Naval Air Station Shearwater in Nova Scotia. In 1956, 3039 was transferred to Montreal and in 1960 was sold by Crown Assets at CFB Downsview to Stan Fitzeur. Stan operated the Harvard, registered CF-NDB, out of Mount Hope until 1978 when it was sold to Bob Hewitt and Norm Beckham. It has been based at Woodstock since that time.
